My brain is mince, as they say in Glasgow. Painful though it may be to pay large sums of money to line the pockets of politicians and civil servant fatcats, I think the administrative burden is far worse than the cash outlay.

And yes, I could hire an accountant but A) I am an accountant, and B) I have a rule of never outsourcing something you don’t fully understand.

So I’m stuck with it for a year or two until I know it well enough to spot their mistakes.

But all that’s boring and I have more interesting articles for you, so without further ado…

An apposite point because although accounting is dull, it’s a part of living your life. You need stuff to write about to write anything.

Long Reads

The Pyrates by George MacDonald Fraser. Magnificently meta and in every way brilliant. One of the funniest books I’ve read and yet the characters are, despite their deliberate caricature, well-formed and compelling. Pair with rum, obviously. Bumbu original for the tropical flavour.

And yes, I picked that book because I’m doing my taxes.

…many weekends ago…

…I mentioned that I was “buried in books and working on a five-figure editing contract from a well-known publisher. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of work—which is why my content production has been light of late.”

Lo, that has continued, and I’ve also contended with my wife heading back to work and returning me to near-full-time Dad mode, cooking for 350 or so, helping the church to move buildings and various other things.

As we move into Q2 (already?!) and 2026 is a quarter done (already?!) I was interested to know how everyone is feeling about the future and…

…well, the answers are avoiding the middle because apparently everyone is either mad optimistic or existentially dreading it.

Of course, there’s one industry that ought to dread the future, Hollywood just can’t learn…

But while Hollywood is dying, storytelling is thriving. If only they’d option books like these instead of sequel-franchise-reboots.

Okay, I haven’t read this one yet. But my friend just released his latest novel, Once Upon a Time in Argentina. Given that his debut novel Medicine Woman was one of my favourite reads last year, I ordered this one the second I saw it was out. (I also ordered a hardcopy of Medicine Woman because I want to read it again…)

Both will be worth your time. Frank and Brady know their craft, write well, and are focused on pure entertainment in everything they put out.

Semi-colons, Sanderson, and Shoedog (but not the Nike one)

Short Reads

Buried as I am in this editing project, I found this observation from fascinating. The project involves turning transcribed lectures and sermons into written prose, and so I’m also reading reams of the author’s written material to catch his style.

One thing he loves to do is use semicolons a lot. Like, really a lot. Like, 121-word long sentences, often with multiple clauses split with semi-colons. And yet the publisher’s samples for the kind of work they wanted had plenty of em dashes too. They felt a little off to me, and I’m realising it’s because the author rarely uses them.

Shoedog, George Pelecanos. Pelecanos is sublime. Dark, gritty, and fully fleshed out. He’s not one to waste a word and he never disappoints. Pairs well with cheap whiskey, ideally looted from a liquor store (my lawyer advises that I clarify this was a joke). Shoedog is beautifully compact, “especially after Sanderson,” I said when I first reviewed this one and that brings me to our medium read…

Author has some thoughts on Brandon Sanderson. I largely agree. Although my interests are drifting towards the older, tauter storytelling of classic fantasy, sci-fi and fairytale; and although I find Brandon getting more clunky and distracted by silly modern political fads; I do still think that Sanderson is a huge net positive for the genre.

And the simple explanation was I didn’t even try and write it.

After several activity-packed days at my in-laws, taking everyone to zoos and castles and dealing with carsick kids on the way home…

…any newsletter would have been sub-par at best.

And I have one commitment on the Write Way:

Grave Descend, Michael Crichton (writing as John Lange). I went through a Crichton-as-Lange kick a few years back after reading Jurassic Park and wondering what Crichton could do with a tighter and more focused thriller. Boy, what can he do… This one is fun, light, engaging and did I mention fun? Crichton without the boring bits makes you realise what an excellent and readable writer he is. An excellent book to read during a cold northern winter. Pairs well with a Bahama mama or a pina colada.

And if I could sum it up in a one-sentence analogy, it’s like learning to cook.

Eating great food shows you what’s possible, learning cooking technique shows you how to get there, but you have to cook a lot to practice those techniques.

First, you read and consume good writing. Then you start writing, and then you study the techniques and skills you need to improve.

To help you with that, here are three things to read.

Long Reads

Starting with a long read this week, there’s a lot of fuss about this one because someone made a TV show, but I recommend starting with the book…

Pendragon by Stephen Lawhead. Technically fourth in a series, and I recommend them all. But this can be read on its own. One of the best tales of Arthur I’ve read. And I’ve read a LOT. Pairs well with a traditional English blend tobacco like Peterson’s 965.

Medium Read

And for something completely different…

…I’m holed up sick in bed and watching a bunch of videos from the Fallow restaurant in London.

This is a great breakdown of what goes into a good ragu.

Yes, it’s not writing. But you can learn a lot from the layers of technique that goes into mastering any craft. Great writers built the “flavour” of prose in a similar way, layering it in stage by stage.

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

The last few days I’ve been taking my youngest out on long walk-naps while listening to Dan Kennedy’s Influential Writing seminars.

On the one hand it means I rarely start writing much before lunch.

On the other, I get much more writing done when I do.

The truth is that time away from your desk is often the most productive time you can spend. Whenever I need to think through something or my mental energy drops, I’ll head out and take a walk.

It’s a habit that’s changed my life in more ways and one.

Not least because it drove me to quit my well-paid accounting job and go full time as a writer and father...

One day my good manager quit and the new lady hauled me up in front of HR for not being at my desk all day. I sat in that meeting, being berated for “not setting a good example” by stepping out to think about work on a walk instead of sitting in front of my screen browsing social media and pretending to work like everyone else, and resolved to hand my notice in ASAP.

Couple months later I was gone, and my full-time writing adventure began.

Taking a hike can change your life in more ways than one…
